The European Commission requires every competent authority to publish information about the requirements and procedures necessary to obtain a Dutch license for regulated professions.
Redwise has been accredited as one of these authorities and is therefore able and allowed to issue certificates for North Sea Pilots (also named Deepsea Pilots). This page will provide the requested information.

Application Process
Applicants who would like to complete study and take the exams to obtain a (temporary) license as North Sea Pilot will need to submit a request via contact details as specified below. This request will need to include documentation as mentioned below under the subtitle ‘Required Documents’.
Costs
The costs of the study amount to +/- EUR 17.000, which consist of:
Mentioned costs are excluding travel boarding lodging costs during the study and training/exam voyages.
Required Documents
In order to apply for the study and/or exam, the candidate will need to show the following documentation:
- At least a relevant Bachelor Degree and a relevant Certificate of Competency (CoC),
- Proven experience of at least four years as Master (No Limitations) on sea-going vessels or proven experience as certified Pilot (No Limitations) in one of the members of the European Union, or one of the members of the European Economic Area,
- A valid maritime Medical Certificate.
During the study, the candidate will need to successfully complete the study program, including the completion of the exams. Accompanied voyages and exam voyages are part of the study program.
When the candidate has successfully completed all procedures of the study and the exam, the candidate will need to submit the following documentation in order to obtain for a license:
- Extract of the Dutch birth registry or extract from a foreign equivalent registry;
- Two realistic and matching passport photographs, with name, initials and date of birth on backside;
- Proof of nationality of one of the member states of the European Union, or one of the other member states within the European Economic Area;
- A valid medical certificate for seafaring personnel, matching requirements mentioned in Article 40 of the Dutch law ‘Wet zeevarenden’;
- Overview with details of most recent pilotage area, as mentioned in addendum 1 of the exam regulations (available on request);
- A valid CoC for Master of all ships;
- Documentation which proves the applicant has at least four years of experience in the function of Master of all Ships No Limitations, or evidence supporting four years of experience as a Ship’s Pilot in one of the member states of the European Union or one of the members states of the European Economic Area,
- Proof of successful completion of a Radar Navigation Course (management level) or evidence of participation in an application course Radar Navigation (management level)
- A valid and approved Marcom-A certificate,
- Proof of payment of exam fees.
Time Span
Average time span of the study is between four to eight months, depending on progress of the candidate.
Scholarship
Redwise-DCP may offer trainee pilots who enter employment with Redwise-DCP a scholarship worth the aforementioned study costs conditions apply.
Objection and Appeal
Objection and appeal can be submitted to the independent advisory board of Redwise-DCP B.V. Contact details of the independent advisory board are available on request.
Other Information
The candidate should have the competencies which are expected to be critical in practicing the profession of North Sea Pilot, which are specified in the Dutch “Besluit opleidingen en bevoegdheden nautische beroepsbeoefenaren” (“BOBNB”) , article 3.2.
Recognition of Foreign Qualifications and Certificates of Deep Sea Pilots working on incidental occasion or for a restricted duration:
Redwise-DCP BV will recognize STCW qualifications and medical certification of all EU member states for entry into the exam that are equivalent to those required in The Netherlands.
Due to the specific navigational area, Deep Sea pilot licenses from EU countries will be recognized only after a successful completion of:
- The oral examination by the examination board,
- Practical examination voyage
- Review of the examination voyage report by the examination board.
